West Side Story

Hey it’s Wednesday again, seems like only yesterday that I last said ‘gaze on this feast of the city’s best mid-week arts treats’, and here I am, saying it again…

NYPC, Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, 7 Aug
Having re-branded themselves as NYPC and slimlined to a duo, disco lovers New Young Pony Club…ahem, I mean NYPC, have a bash at replicating their mid-2000s megahit ‘Ice Cream’ via a cool new van-load of modern digi-pop tasties. Details here.

Prince Of Thebes/Oedipus And Antigone, The Scoop, 7 Aug – 1 Sep
More London‘s totally free arts festival presents a pair of plays set in the ancient Greek city of Thebes. Catch ‘Prince Of Thebes’ – a magical myth kids will love – and ‘Oedipus Antigone’ – which interweaves Aeschylus and Sophocles’ takes on the downfall of the Theban royal family – every evening Wednesday to Sunday between now and 1 Sep. Details here.

[title of show], Landor Theatre, 7 Aug – 14 Sep
A hit on and off Broadway in 2006/8, Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen’s one-act drama-within-a-drama, a “love letter to musical theatre, following your dreams, and daring to believe that you can actually get paid to do what you love” based on the pair’s real life experiences, celebrates its British premiere this eve at Clapham’s Landor. Details and tickets here.

West Side Story, Sadler’s Wells, 7 Aug – 22 Sep
Sondheim & Bernstein’s slick and gritty ‘Romeo And Juliet’ spin-off, a tale of embattled street gangs and a boy-girl love affair, tries its hand again at Sadler’s Wells, having last played at the theatre to Shakespearian-scale acclaim back in 2008. Details and tickets here.
