Hurrayyyy, it’s Brixton’s yearly Splash carnival today, a time to eat jerk whilst avoiding behaving like one. Speaking of which, let’s take a peep at the day’s artsy (and mainly Brixton-based as it happens) Splash alternatives…

Natalie Gray – Death By Karaoke, Camden Head, 4-6 Aug
Laughter, tears, and toe-tapping are all potential reactions tonight, as Canadian card Natalie Gray grabs the mike in this candid karaoke sing-along. In it, Nat maps the fragility of the human heart and spirit, and the things that can break them. Part of the Camden Fringe. Details and tickets here.

Up On The Roof… Official Brixton Splash After Party feat DJ Derek, The Lambeth, 4 Aug (pictured)
Having revealed that he’ll hang up his headphones at the end of the year, Britain’s #1 OAP reggae DJ Derek Morris (as cartoonified above) spins rocksteady post-Splash vibes on top of Brixton’s rebranded Clubhouse, the Lambeth. Derek, by the way, shares a bill with Don Letts, Trojan Sound System’s Earl Gateshead, live  band The Drop, and DJ Count Skylarkin. Details and tickets here.

Hamlet, Market Traders’ Car Park Brixton, 4-26 Aug
A keenly site-specific spin on Shakespeare’s spiny Danish tragedy, as Synomatic engineer a version set immediately pre Brixton’s 1981 riots in a real live Brixton car park. As it’s open air, this is all at the mercy of the weather, but on the bright side, it’s fine to picnic and BYOB. Details and tickets here.
