Today in London: Sunday 24 February 2013

So, ‘Family Guy’ man Seth MacFarlane is hosting the 85th Academy Awards – that’s the Oscars, to you and I – tonight, and I personally can’t wait. ‘Lincoln’, ‘Life Of Pi’ or ‘Les Miserables’, which letter ‘L’-titled film shall win the jury’s hearts? Or will it be ‘Silver Linings Playbook’? I really, really pray it won’t.

Anyway, moving away from LA and back to the ‘real world’ for a while, look at this list of London’s cultural silver linings… part Oscars-relevant…

Stand Up For Hope, Soho Theatre, 24 Feb
Schoolgirl comedienne Shappi Khorsandi invites comic contemporaries David Baddiel, Milton Jones and Dan Atapolski to act the fool in the name of Iran-based charity Omid (meaning ‘hope’) International, an aid organisation assisting Indian street kids and youths searching for asylum. Details and tickets here.

Lindsay Lohan Selectrospective, Prince Charles Cinema, 24 Feb
The PCC shows its ironical GSOH by reeling off a trinity of never-Oscar-nominated starlet Lindsay Lohan’s greatest filmic hits, starting with ‘The Parent Trap’, and taking in ‘Freaky Friday’ and ‘Mean Girls’. Details and tickets here.

Oscar Night!, Roxy Bar & Screen, 24 Feb
The Roxy Bar & Screen lays on an Oscar night glam-a-thon featuring live coverage from the LA-based awards-giving itself, complimentary prosecco and popcorn, games, prizes, and an all-night bar. Details and tickets here.

EKO presents… PINS, Roundhouse, 24 Feb (pictured)
London collective EKO cherry-picks artists to adorn this one-off audiovisual night, as makes a fitting finale to this year’s Roundhouse Rising Festival. Noirish Mancs PINS, ‘junk jazz’ band Drop Out Venus, hypno-pop soloist Female Band and Nick Cave-like songwriter John J Presley will all play live against backing visuals by Eyes On The Wall. A feast for the ears, and the eyes. Details and tickets here.
