Covent Garden May Fayre

Wepa! It’s a uncharacteristically carnivalesque Sunday in London, which makes a nice change from the usual dreary roast din and idle sofa matinee thereafter. Here’s a taster-plate of today’s cultural tidbits…

TODAY’S FESTIVAL CHOICES

Covent Garden May Fayre And Puppet Festival, St Paul’s Churchyard, Bedford Street, 12 May (pictured)
This non-commercial enterprise celebrating the 351st birthday of puppetry’s most loved squeaky-voiced lout (no, not Sooty, it’s Mr Punch) may seem like one for the kids but parents and non-parents alike will appreciate its craft-and-sweetie stalls, brass band, liberal BYOB license and – naturally – array of fab fabric characters. Details here.

The World On Regent Street, Regent Street, 12 May
It’s time to take back Regent Street from the traffic, as one of London’s main shopping thoroughfares is jammed instead with cuisine and culture by participating nations Argentina, Trinidad And Tobago, China, Egypt, Turkey and Malaysia. Whilst they’ve arranged tango and calligraphy classes, a kung fu display, a steel-pan band and various culinary treats, Great Britain will represent itself via a giant Wallace And Gromit hot air balloon. Details here.

TODAY’S FILM CHOICES

Between Two Pillows – A John Hughes Special, Riverside Studios
Hammersmith-based Riverside Studios is the place to be if you want to watch a pair or so of films by the same director, sandwiched into a delectable cinematic treat that’ll last all day. And tonight’s prix fixe programme – a John Hughes quadruple bill featuring ‘Pretty In Pink’, ‘The Breakfast Club’, ‘Planes, Trains And Automobiles’ and ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ – is no exception. Details and tickets here.
