Winter Shuffle

TODAY IN LONDON “Requiem For Detroit’ filmmaker Julien Temple, budding pun runners Sy Thomas and Leo Kearse, and Stones Throw-signed hip hop icon James Pants feature in the following TW-recommended events…

COMEDY: Pun Run feat Eric Lampaert/Sy Thomas/Jessica Fostekew/Leo Kearse, The Phoenix, 5 Dec
Tricksy linguist Bec Hill adjudicates the likes of elastic expressionist Eric Lampaert, “brilliantly entertaining yet self-depracating” (deem ThreeWeeks) Sy Thomas and ‘Atella The Pun’ himself, word master Leo Kearse, in a pun race to produce the most quips, in which even the cheesiest lines are accepted and, indeed, encouraged. Details and tickets here.

FESTIVAL: Winter Shuffle, St Clement’s Social Club, 5-15 Dec (pictured)
Kicking off tonight with a showing of Julien Temple’s ‘Requiem For Detroit’, plus an in-person interview with the director himself, the winter edition of new-ish film/culture puzzle Shuffle also includes over the next ten days Jarvis Cocker talking 1976 sci-fi stalwart ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ with its maker Nicolas Roeg, Danny Boyle shedding light on his 2007 space thriller ‘Sunshine’ with TV boff Brian Cox and film buff Mark Kermode, and a wreath of festive screenings for mini elves and their elders alike. Refreshments will be served beside a liberal helping of live music, theatre, classes and debates in the festival’s Living Room space. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: James Pants, Plastic People, 5 Dec
James Pants (of Stones Throw Records renown) rarely raises his head above the live parapet, and yet here he is, firing off a set of experimental hip hop missiles. But don’t thank TW London for this, thank top promotions co Huntley & Palmers, who’ve also brought over Pants’ co-Stones Throw-signing Vex Ruffin for one night only. Details and tickets here.
