Three To Stream 26 May-1 Jun: Comedy Options, Theatre Options, Other Options

By | Published on Friday 22 May 2020

We’re still recommending great culture online while London’s venues remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of these online shows are free to access but with options to make donations. If you can afford to support the performers and producers behind this entertainment that would be brilliant.

THREE COMEDY OPTIONS

Just The Tonic’s Working From Home | 30 May
There’s a starry line up for Just The Tonic’s upcoming online comedy night in which you can expect to see some of your very favourite funny people doing and saying humorous things: pay what you can and then tune in by 9pm to hear from Al Murray, Seann Walsh, Susie McCabe, Matt Forde, Paul McCaffrey, Darus Davies and Darrell Martin. Info right about here.

Desiree Burch: Desiree’s Coming Early (pictured – image by Idil Sukan)
Time is of the essence here! I thought I had better warn you, just in case you haven’t yet accessed it via Soho Theatre’s on demand service, that you’ve only got a couple of days left to watch the brilliant Desiree Burch’s limited virtual run of ‘Desiree’s Coming Early’. Head this way to find out more and to watch this great show now.

Celia Pacquola: The Looking Glass | NextUp Comedy
I keep telling you all to subscribe to NextUp Comedy – because it’s one of a number of things that will help comedy lovers get through this trying time – so if you still haven’t done it, I am not sure what to do. But surely the lure of the work of TW favourite Celia Paquola will swing it this time? Put aside 64 minutes to get to know this critically acclaimed Antipodean. View it here.

THREE THEATRE OPTIONS

The Special Relationship | Soho Theatre | from 26 May
Another pick from Soho Theatre’s on demand stuff for you now and this one’s for theatre lovers. As of Tuesday 26 May you can access a recording of ‘The Special Relationship’, filmed at the venue just a few weeks ago. It’s a critically acclaimed piece developed from interviews with ex-prisoners and experts in immigration and criminal law. More here.

Messiah | Bristol Old Vic | from 29 May
“The death of a messianic leader has left his bereaved community of followers struggling with conflict, doubt and the shaking of faith that this has awoken. See and hear ‘Messiah’ as Handel controversially intended – performed for the people in a theatre, rather than in a sacred space”. This excellent dramatised concert is available to watch for one week as of Friday. All the details are here.

Top Story | Optimist Creations and Cherry Picked Pictures (pictured)
You might already have come across this one as it’s been available on YouTube all lockdown. But you might not have. So, now you will have, because I am about to tell you about it! It’s suitably apocalyptic, focusing on friends living out the week before a massive meteor is set to hit the earth. Watch it here.

THREE OTHER OPTIONS

Hunt & Darton’s Radio Local | Barbican and Golden Lane estates | 30 May-12 Jun
You might recall that a couple of weeks ago we ran a Q&A with Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton to find out more about their ‘Radio Local’ project, which was then taking place via the Norwich & Norfolk Festival, albeit – because of lockdown – co-ordinated from the pair’s respective homes. Now the project’s focus is London, with the last iteration presented in conjunction with East London Radio. Confirmed guests include Scottee and Bourgeois and Maurice. See this website here to tune in and find out more.

Hussein Chalayan: Gravity Fatigue | Sadlers Wells (pictured)
One for the dance fans amongst you now with this offering from Sadlers Wells’ digital programme. Hussein Chalayan’s ‘Gravity Fatigue’ – which “takes its inspiration from themes of identity and displacement, and the disconnection experienced in public spaces at moments of transition” and which was premiered at the venue in 2015 – will be available to view for one week from this coming Friday. Thinking On Sunday: The Idea Of The Brain – A History | Conway Hall | 31 May
“Today we tend to picture it as a computer. Earlier scientists thought about it in their own technological terms: as a telephone switchboard, or a clock, or all manner of fantastic mechanical or hydraulic devices. Could the right metaphor unlock its deepest secrets once and for all?” Another really interesting sounding online talk from Conway Hall for you – this time on the idea of the brain.
