“On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the bombing and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Two fifteen year old school girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cummings, spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive.” A brilliant-sounding depiction of a terrible yet amazing story. More here.
The Lago Season | Tristan Bates Theatre | 18 Sep-6 Oct
A rep season of plays from the acclaimed Lago Theatre. There are three productions: ‘Revelation 1:18’, which explores themes around toxic masculinity, self worth and male suicide, ‘Wine’, which looks at “both sides of the pro-abortion argument’, and ‘No Help Sent’, which imagines a near future in which the NHS has been privatised. A play about how music marks the significant moments of our lives, which had a great run at the last but one edfringe: “What are the songs of your life? Two men meet in a club. It’s only supposed to be casual sex, yet their paths keep crossing until… some kind of relationship begins. But how does a closeted man love another man? Is it a relationship?
