FRINGE PREVIEWS
Creepy Boys | Omnibus Theatre | 18-19 Jul
Not long now until the Edinburgh Festival begins, so you can imagine that we are all kinds of excited here at TW Towers. Which means, yes, we are going to begin our tips for this week with a section on edfringe London previews. First up is the excellent ‘Creepy Boys’, from which you can expect “a queer fantasy, a chaotic comedy romp”, plus clowning, drag, puppetry and showtunes. You will find more info here.
One From The Vaults | Old Red Lion Theatre | 19 Jul
We developed our love of improv shows up in the Burgh, so it’s always fitting to talk about them when we are speaking of edfringe. And I am especially excited about this one, which heads up for a run mid-August at PBH’s Free Fringe at Banshee Labyrinth, because it is horror themed: the idea is that they recreate ‘long lost movies’, so you can look forward to references to great British horror of the 50s and 60s. Dugsi Dayz | New Diorama | 22-24 Jul (pictured)
“Four students find themselves stuck in dugsi detention… What did they do to end up here? And is there any chance of them getting on? Salma, Yasmin, Munira and Hani each see the world and their place in it in radically different ways”. Inspired by ‘The Breakfast Club’, this show about Somali girls forced to spend time with each other in school detention promises to be both hilarious and authentic. Info here.

Union | Arcola Theatre | 19 Jul-12 Aug
Right, more theatre, and this one sounds rather compelling, as it’s a “wildly hilarious odyssey through London, in all its brilliant, booze-soaked yuppified but still punk glory”. It’s about successful property developer Saskia, who – on the eve of the biggest deal of her career – finds herself “plagued by phonecalls and ghosts”, and sees her life begin to unravel. Romeo and Juliet | The Pilot | 24-25 Jul
We recently recommended Open Bar Theatre’s ‘Twelfth Night’, which is on a tour of pub gardens. And now we are recommending their production of ‘Romeo And Juliet’, also on a tour of pub gardens, firstly at The Pilot in Greenwich from 24-25 Jul, but also at The Rose & Crown in Ealing on 11 Aug, and various other home counties locations. Spin | The Hope Theatre | 23-24 Jul (pictured)
“Join our aspiring spin instructor as her enthusiastic attempts to create the perfect class are derailed by a forced journey of self-discovery. What starts as your average spin class, featuring the tightest of lycra and some sexy beats, soon gets weird(er?). As she confronts her past, The Instructor has big questions to ask”. Intriguing one this, written and performed (on a spin bike!) by Kate Sumpter, it’s a darkly comic one woman show making some important points. Click here.

Ride | Southwark Playhouse SE11 | 19 Jul-12 Aug (pictured)
As ever, the final section of the week is a bit of a mixed bag genre wise, and we start by heading over to Southwark Playhouse (the SE11 one) for ‘Ride’, an already-acclaimed musical about historical figure Annie Cohen Kopchovsky – aka Annie Londonderry – who in 1894-95 became the first woman to bicycle around the world, and was, by all accounts, a fantastic storyteller. Fray | Wilton’s Musical Hall | 24-26 Jul
We’ve had a musical, so now let’s have some dance theatre, specifically some with original music, world-class hip-hop dance, voice and large screen visuals. All this is used to depict the world of two deeply bonded brothers who connect through gaming, but who find themselves being drawn apart by real life events and dark forces. It sounds really interesting, read about it here.
Nan, Me and Barbara Pravi | Camden People’s Theatre | 19-20 Jul
Finally, a work in progress show from someone we’ve (relatively) recently taken an interest in: Hannah Maxwell, who we interviewed pre-pandemic about 2019 edfringe success ‘I, AmDram’. This new show promises to be “’La La Land’ meets ‘Mission Impossible’ meets Hannah’s nan”, and explores grief, care, addiction and recovery. Head to the venue website here to find out more.
