Timber!

And the ThisWeek-tipped, LDN-based events happening this festive season are…

CIRCUS: Timber! | Queen Elizabeth Hall | 21-31 Dec (pictured)
This big, beardy, banjo-playing axe-travaganza by Quebec’s world-acclaimed Cirque Alfonse finds the whole Alfonse family – from 66 year-old grandpa Alain, to three year-old grandson Arthur – going down to the woods for some good old plank-balancing, log-chucking and saw-craft, with live traditional folk sing-songs thrown in to (steel capped) boot. Details and tickets here.

COMEDY: Adam Riches – Adam of The Riches | Soho Theatre | until 3 Jan
Fosters Comedy Award-winning character champ Adam Riches – the king of, let’s say, ‘highly insistent’ audience interaction – presents this big, bold smartly played hour of in-your-face foolishness. Details and tickets here.

COMEDY: Tony Law – Enter The ToneZone | Soho Theatre | 29 Dec – 17 Jan 2015
Sharp-witted Canadian nonsensicalist Tony Law crash-lands with this ‘life-affirming, life-changing’ show, which features magical shapes, one original song (and no more!) and fits of interpretative dancing, albeit dancing that interprets both world events and the fear of death. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Backto95 Boxing Day Special | The Scala | 26 Dec
Meanwhile, they’ll be heading Backto95 at The Scala, with the Kings Cross venue split into four rooms covering different genres. The main room will have old skool house and garage classics, headlined by Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont. Then there’ll be old skool jungle in the Glass Bar, soulful deep house hosted by House.fm in the Foyer Bar, and 80s/90s soul, R&B and bashment in the Balcony Bar. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Rinse Boxing Day w/ Waze & Odyssey + P Money + Newham Generals | Fabric |  26 Dec
As is a tradition as old as grime, Rinse’s Boxing Day pile-on is live at Fabric again, with this year’s featuring lords-of-house Waze & Odyssey, Lewisham MC P Money, Forest Gate-based crew Newham Generals, bass producer Plastician, nu garage producer Chris Lorenzo, fast-rising grime clique The Square (feat Novelist), and loads more. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Shut That Shit Down and Step Back Boxing Day Old School Special | Brixton Jamm | 26 Dec
Last bit of Boxing Day clubbing, and Shut That Shit Down and Step Back are teaming up for some junglist action at Brixton Jamm, which will specifically cover the years 1988 to 1994. DJs holding hard and fast to that rule will include Fabio, Grooverider, Randall, Edzy, 2 Bad Mice, Kenny Ken, Jumpin’ Jack Frost and Doc Scott. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Spoony’s House Boxing Day Special | The Jazz Café | 26 Dec
As for Rinse FM’s Friday night man DJ Spoony, he’ll be hosting this party at the Jazz Café in Camden, where he’ll be joined by Norris ‘Da Boss’ Windross, DJ Talent and MC Ranking for a night of UK Garage and soulful house. There’ll be Christmas giveaways on the night too, apparently. Details and tickets here.

THEATRE: A Christmas Carol | Old Red Lion Theatre | until 3 Jan 2015
Dickens’ fable of a Christmas meanie redeemed is adapted in lively style by Neil Bartlett, with Gus Miller directing, and a cast of six on-the-ball actors playing all the parts in the story. “Our ensemble never leave the stage, so they are constantly playing with Scrooge, as characters or not – pushing, teasing and sometimes scaring him into his big change”, Miller tells ThisWeek London in a recent interview. Details and tickets here.

THEATRE/COMEDY: Albert Einstein – Relativitively Speaking | Southwark Playhouse | 20 Dec – 3 Jan 2015
E = MC FUN as theatre-maker and comic brainiac John Hinton gives his best Albert Einstein in this fact-checked (and, essentially entertaining) physics seminar, which is peppered with singing, rapping, theorising, and, Hinton tells ThreeWeeks, “little-known facts from Einstein’s life – that he invented a fridge and married his cousin, and the story of what became of his brain”. Details and tickets here.

THEATRE: Bette & Joan: The Final Curtain | St James Theatre | 3-9 Jan
Foursight Theatre tell a “compelling and original tale” in this surreal ‘undead’ spin on one of Hollywood’s most A-list diva rivalries, that of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Details and tickets here.
