BAM Festival

TODAY IN LONDON, TW’s tipped events feature art darling Grayson Perry, soapbox bard Billy Bragg, Canadian comedians Tony Law and Mae Martin, and live sub-bass bunker the Boiler Room…

COMEDY: The Phoenix Fringe Winter Weekender, 31 Jan – 2 Feb
A beautiful winter’s stew peppered with the spiciest stand-ups in town, the Phoenix’s very own Fringe defies the cold with the help of criminally-odd Canadian loon Tony Law, Radio 4’s resident song-spoof artiste Mitch Benn, ventriloquist Nina Conti and Law’s fellow Canada native and a breath-of-fresh-air, Mae Martin, who light up tonight’s line-up. Elsewhere, there be incredible sets from Alan Davies, Nish Kumar, Robin Ince, Al Murray, Bridget Christie and Kevin Eldon. Details and (hot) tickets here.

FESTIVAL: Being A Man, Southbank Centre, 31 Jan – 2 Feb (pictured)
Grayson Perry, Billy Bragg, Akala and Simon Armitage celebrate their shared maleness in this brand new festival of film screenings, debates, presentations and live displays of artistic integrity. Based on the findings of a mass ‘think-in’ by 250 men, each day bears a different theme – ‘Policy Making’ is today’s, followed by ‘Society’ and, finally, ‘Getting Personal’ – in a bid to investigate all facets of what it means to be a ‘he’. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Boiler Room’s Sound It Out, V&A, 31 Jan
Live/online sonic hothouse the Boiler Room tonight takes over the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as part of the V&A’s Friday Lates series. The free-entry event will feature still-TBA DJ and live sets taking place in secret spaces at the V&A, and various installations looking at music’s relationship to technology, and vice versa, not least a performance by specialist synth shop London Modular featuring Hemlock Recordings boss Jack Dunning, and talks by sociologist Laurie Waller and sonic artists Tom Richards and Fiorenzo Palermo. Details here.
